Canadian SPT-3 (Thermoplastic Portable Cord) is a parallel, non-jacketed lamp cord featuring two or three flexible stranded bare copper conductors. Its defining characteristic is the thickest insulation among the SPT series (SPT-1, -2, -3), typically measuring 0.060 inches (1.52 mm) or more in wall thickness. This heavy-duty PVC insulation provides superior dielectric strength and abrasion resistance, with a voltage rating of 300V and a temperature rating often up to 105°C. The conductors are usually 18 AWG or 16 AWG stranded copper, and the cable includes a molded polarity rib on the neutral conductor for correct wiring identification.

SPT-3 cable is designed for medium-duty electrical applications where the cord may be subject to occasional rough handling or moderate mechanical stress. Its extra-thick insulation makes it suitable for power supply cords of larger household appliances, portable lighting equipment, floor polishers, and heavy-duty kitchen devices such as toasters or electric skillets. It is also commonly used for air conditioner cords, refrigerator internal wiring, and some light industrial or commercial extension cords where added durability and electrical safety are required under Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification.
